Contact the Elderly

Contact the Elderly is the only national charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and social isolation amongst older people through face-to-face contact.

The charity organises volunteer-led monthly afternoon tea parties for people aged 75 and over who live on their own with little to no support from friends, family or statutory services. Contact the Elderly provides a lifeline of friendship to those who need it most.

The concept of an afternoon tea party is a very simple one but the benefits are profound. Research has shown that older people attending the tea parties on a regular basis feel less lonely, enjoy improved health and feel part of their local community again.

The concept of an afternoon tea party is a very simple one but the benefits are profound. Research has shown that older people attending the tea parties on a regular basis feel less lonely, enjoy improved health and feel part of their local community again.

Contact the Elderly recruits volunteers to organise the local groups, collect and accompany older guests to and from the gatherings and host the tea parties in their own homes. For many of Contact the Elderly’s older guests, the monthly tea parties are the only time they leave the house and speak to other people. Friendships are formed quickly in the groups and loneliness is replaced by companionship and conversation. Similarly, the volunteers find a great deal of satisfaction and fulfilment by getting to know the older guests and giving back to their community.

Contact the Elderly tea parties always take place on a Sunday when most other services do not operate, as this is considered the loneliest day by many older people.

The charity currently has over 8,100 active volunteers throughout England, Scotland and Wales, and is always looking for more volunteers to help reach out to older people who are completely cut off from society. Those interested in volunteering with Contact the Elderly should visit www.contact-the-elderly.org.uk/become-a-volunteer for more information.

Anyone interested in joining their local tea party group as a guest, or anyone who would like to refer an older person to the service, can find all the relevant information at www.contact-the-elderly.org.uk/be-our-guest

Donations made to Contact the Elderly go directly towards launching new tea party groups in areas where there is little other service provision, and sustaining existing groups. 91% of money received by the charity goes directly to the frontline.
